Syria's Tribal Council Pledges Full Support for Suwayda Ceasefire

(MENAFN) In a public statement on Saturday, the Syrian Council of Tribes and Clans pledged full support for the immediate and wide-reaching ceasefire declared by the presidency in the conflict-stricken southern province of Suwayda.

Broadcast live, the council voiced approval for the government’s decision to end hostilities and facilitate access for security forces into the troubled area.

It also delivered a stern message, cautioning that failure by the Druze community to observe the ceasefire would prompt a swift response: they are “prepared to respond at any time.”

Earlier the same day, the Syrian presidency had announced an urgent and complete ceasefire in Suwayda following a surge of violence in the region.

Clashes erupted on July 13 between Bedouin Arab tribes and armed Druze factions. The fighting intensified, prompting Israeli airstrikes that targeted both Syrian military positions and infrastructure in Damascus. Israel defended the strikes as necessary for the “protection of Druze communities.”

President Ahmad al-Sharaa, who assumed leadership of Syria’s transitional government after Bashar al-Assad’s ouster in December 2024, urged national solidarity, calling on all Syrians to stand united.
