In courageous step: Dutch FM steps down after actions against Israel were blocked
As stated by reports, Veldkamp explained that while the government had already taken certain steps, he believed stronger measures were necessary in light of the ongoing situation in Gaza City and the West Bank.
However, with coalition parties VVD and BBB opposing any new initiatives, Veldkamp said he no longer had confidence that his proposals could be carried out, which ultimately led to his decision to leave his post.
His resignation came after he had assured the Dutch Parliament that he would put forward what he described as “necessary” measures against Israel—a commitment made without prior agreement with his coalition allies.
Following Veldkamp’s departure, the political party NSC announced the withdrawal of all its ministers and state secretaries from the caretaker government.
NSC leader and Deputy Prime Minister Eddy van Hijum explained the decision, declaring: "The Israeli government’s actions violate international treaties. A line must be drawn.”
