Malaysian PM condemns Israel’s recognition of Somaliland
“Such actions violate international law and humanitarian principles, and would only perpetuate injustice rather than contribute to peace,” Anwar said during a press briefing, according to reports. He added that any attempt to use the territory “for the forced transfer of Palestinians is totally and wholly unacceptable.”
The remarks follow statements from the Palestinian group Hamas, which on Saturday rejected Israeli plans to displace Palestinians from Gaza, including potential transfers to Somaliland, after Tel Aviv’s recognition of the region.
Anwar also referenced recent discussions in Florida concerning the next phase of the peace process, warning that a return to large-scale violence would inflict an “intolerable cost” on civilians and further undermine fragile prospects for peace. “Israel must be held accountable for its actions and obligations under international law,” he emphasized.
Israel became the first country to recognize Somaliland as a sovereign state on Friday, triggering widespread international backlash. Critics have described the move as a violation of international law and a potential threat to regional stability.
Somalia reaffirmed its firm commitment to national sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity following Israel’s recognition of the breakaway region. Somaliland, which declared independence in 1991, remains unrecognized by the international community and functions as a de facto autonomous administrative, political, and security entity, while the Somali central government continues to struggle to assert control over the area.
