Governor Hochul Announces Groundbreaking of $2.8 Million Mineola Community Center Renovations on Long Island
Governor Kathy Hochul today announced the groundbreaking of a $2.8 million project to modernize the Village of Mineola Community Center in Nassau County, creating an improved year-round destination for recreation, community programs and local organizations. New York State is supporting the project with a $1.13 million grant through Empire State Development to upgrade the aging facility and ensure it can continue serving Mineola residents for years to come.
“Community centers are at the heart of our neighborhoods — places where families gather, young people play, seniors stay connected and neighbors build lasting relationships,” Governor Hochul said. “Our investment in the Mineola Community Center will give residents a modern, welcoming space to come together while strengthening an important community resource for the next generation.”
Empire State Development President, CEO and Commissioner Hope Knight said, “The Mineola Community Center is an important part of everyday life in the Village, bringing residents together for recreation, programs and community events throughout the year. This investment will transform an aging facility into a modern and reliable community resource that can better serve residents of all ages.”

Located at 155 Washington Avenue, the Mineola Community Center serves residents of all ages and provides space for recreation, Village events and programs offered by local nonprofit, veterans, senior, athletic and civic organizations. The project will make comprehensive improvements throughout the facility, including modernizing its gymnasium and classrooms, renovating its kitchen and replacing aging heating and cooling systems.
Additional improvements will include a new multipurpose gym floor, wall padding and lighting; new classroom windows and audiovisual equipment; upgrades to the stage and additional storage; new recreation office space; and replacement of the building’s boiler. The project is also expected to create 10 new full-time jobs.
The upgrades will address aging and unreliable building systems that have limited the center’s use and, at times, disrupted programming. Anticipated to be complete in June 2027, the renovated facility will provide a more comfortable, dependable and flexible space for the wide range of organizations, activities and community events it hosts throughout the year.

Village of Mineola Mayor Paul A. Pereira said, “The renovations to the Village of Mineola’s Community Center are long overdue. Thanks to a $1.13 million state grant, the Village is finally making these improvements a reality. Over the years, our center has served thousands of residents. It is a place where youth athletes practice, summer campers enjoy activities, and seniors meet socially, while also hosting various community events throughout the year. The building was in dire need of repairs and upgrades, and I am grateful to announce that this work is now underway. The project will be fully completed in time for next summer. Our Community Center is a true Village gem, and, thanks to this grant, it will remain a space our entire community can take pride in.”
The State’s $1.13 million investment was awarded through ESD’s Capital Improvements for Pro-Housing Communities Program as part of Round 14 of the Regional Economic Development Council Initiative. Mineola was the first municipality on Long Island and among the first municipalities statewide to achieve Pro-Housing Community certification, recognizing the Village’s commitment to supporting housing growth.
