Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso announces First Public meeting and Call for project proposals for East Williamsburg as part of the NYS Department of State’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) $ 20 million Grant
BROOKLYN, NY – Today, Brooklyn Borough President Antonio announced the launch of the East Williamsburg Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI). East Williamsburg has been awarded $20 million through the New York State DRI to implement catalytic projects that can spur revitalization of the community’s commercial corridors.
A Call for Projects to be funded with the $20 million was launched following the first Local Planning Committee (LPC) meeting on September 16. DRI funds must be used for capital projects that have the potential to transform the neighborhood’s downtown physical environment in ways that will benefit current residents and future generations. All projects must be within the East Williamsburg DRI Strategic Investment Area.
“This $20 million investment is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for members of the East Williamsburg community to see the neighborhood grow how they want it to,” said Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso. “I was proud to lead the application process alongside Graham Ave BID and Grand Street BID which brought this funding to East Williamsburg. Now, I encourage everyone from the neighborhood to join this upcoming workshop and make their voices heard for the future of their community.”
To be eligible for consideration, projects must:
- Be a capital project, e.g. new development and/or rehabilitation of existing buildings, public space improvements, signage or branding projects, façade enhancements, etc.
- Have a project sponsor who can lead the planning and implementation, enter into a contract agreement with the State, and can cover project costs while awaiting reimbursement from the State.
- Demonstrate site control via ownership, lease or another legal agreement.
- Have a defined scope and budget based on professional plans or estimates from comparable projects.
- Demonstrate that the project will contribute to the economic revitalization of the East Williamsburg DRI Strategic Investment Area.
Borough President Reynoso and the State are committed to ensuring that the DRI process is inclusive and transparent, and welcome participation from all members of the East Williamsburg community.
The first public workshop will be held on September 23 at 6:00 PM, where community members can help shape the vision and revitalization goals for the East Williamsburg DRI and learn more about the Call for Projects. The event will take place at the Williamsburg Community Center located at 195 Graham Avenue.
